Builders Events Mobile - Next Steps & Improvements

Overview​

This document outlines planned improvements, known issues, and future development priorities for the Builders Events Mobile App. Items are organized by priority and category to help guide development efforts.

High Priority Items​

1. Fix Pre-Existing TypeScript Errors​

Status: In Progress Priority: High Effort: Medium

Description: Several TypeScript errors exist in the app/ directory that need to be resolved. These are primarily type safety issues that don't affect runtime behavior but should be fixed for code quality.

Files Affected:

  • Various screen components in app/(tabs)/
  • Event detail screens in app/event/[id]/

Tasks:

  • Audit all TypeScript errors with pnpm type-check
  • Fix type definitions for React Navigation props
  • Ensure all API response types are properly defined
  • Update component props to use proper TypeScript interfaces
  • Remove any @ts-ignore or @ts-expect-error comments

Estimated Time: 1-2 weeks

2. Increase Test Coverage​

Status: Planned Priority: High Effort: High

Description: Current test coverage is at 29 passing tests across 3 suites. Goal is to increase coverage to 80% across all critical paths.

Current Coverage:

  • ✅ API Client (13 tests)
  • ✅ EventProvider (9 tests)
  • ✅ Query Hooks (6 tests)

Needed Coverage:

  • Add tests for all query hooks (use-schedule, use-people, use-messages, etc.)
  • Add tests for BrandingProvider
  • Add tests for ShopProvider
  • Add tests for authentication utilities
  • Add tests for biometric authentication hook
  • Add component tests for UI components
  • Add integration tests for critical user flows

3. Authentication Edge Cases​

Status: In Progress Priority: High Effort: Medium

Description: Address occasional Clerk authentication edge cases where token refresh fails or authentication state becomes inconsistent.

Known Issues:

  • Token refresh sometimes fails on app resume
  • Session state can become stale after long app suspension
  • Email verification redirect occasionally fails

Tasks:

  • Implement more robust token refresh logic
  • Add token expiration monitoring
  • Improve session state synchronization
  • Add retry logic for failed auth requests
  • Implement graceful degradation for auth failures
  • Add comprehensive auth state logging

4. Performance Optimizations​

Description: Optimize app performance for slower devices and larger datasets.

Optimization Areas:

  • Implement virtualization for long lists (FlatList optimization)
  • Add image caching and lazy loading
  • Optimize bundle size (analyze with npx react-native-bundle-visualizer)
  • Implement code splitting where possible
  • Add request deduplication for API calls
  • Optimize re-renders with React.memo and useMemo
  • Profile and optimize animation performance

5. Enhanced Error Handling & Logging​

Description: Implement comprehensive error tracking and logging for production debugging.

Tasks:

  • Integrate Sentry for crash reporting
  • Add structured logging with log levels
  • Implement error boundaries for all major sections
  • Add user-facing error messages with retry options
  • Create error recovery flows
  • Add network error detection and offline mode
  • Implement breadcrumb tracking for debugging

6. Offline Mode & Data Persistence​

Status: Planned Priority: Medium Effort: High

Description: Enhance offline capabilities to allow users to access cached data without network connection.

Tasks:

  • Implement full offline mode with React Query persistence
  • Add offline indicator in UI
  • Queue mutations for when network returns
  • Add selective data syncing
  • Implement conflict resolution for offline edits
  • Add cache invalidation strategies
  • Test offline → online transitions

7. Push Notification Enhancements​

Description: Improve push notification system with rich notifications and better targeting.

Description: Keep dependencies up-to-date for security and feature improvements.

Major Updates Needed:

  • Monitor Expo SDK releases (currently on 52)
  • Update React Native when stable releases available
  • Update Clerk SDK for new features
  • Update React Query to latest version
  • Update Stripe SDK for new payment methods
  • Update React Native Maps for performance improvements

Process:

  • Review release notes before updating
  • Test thoroughly after each update
  • Update one major dependency at a time
  • Run full test suite after updates

17. Code Refactoring​

Description: Refactor code for better maintainability and scalability.
